What we say...

The Burner is no new kid on the block, but it continues to be a favourite amongst TG staff, readers… and seemingly testers. The Dual Crown technology lowers the CG which leads to higher launch and low spin. The only thing that put our testers off was the look of the club – the dual crown does make it a little bulbous, but performance-wise this stacked up with the best on test.

  • 3 out of 5 a bit long

hi i bought the burner with a 12loft  regular flex shaft just after i started to play golf. I was playin of 24h.c and although this club can hit the ball miles when you make a good connection the long shaft makes it very hard to control. I have lowered my h.c to 20 now and regularly have a good point score when i play . I have just traded in the burner for the r9 10.5 loft and can believe the difference. I very rarely miss a fairway now and the ball goes exactly where i want it to go. I would advice anyone to pay the extra a buy your self a trually great club.

I bought my Burner Driver 2009 (regular flex, 10.5) 9 months ago and have given it plenty of use since then. Hit the sweet spot and the ball will fly miles! it's relatively forgiving and can deliver some serious distance. I try not to hammer the ball too hard and am not the fastest of swingers but average about 250 yards with this club. A good sweet connection will give the distance due to the size / volume of the head, so you have to keep reminding yourself that it's a smoth shot rather than a hard or fast one which will deliver distance. The main negatives i've got for the club are the size of the head and the length of the shaft. Swinging the Burner, you really do feel like you're holding onto one end of a very long stick, certainly a good couple of inches longer than the new R9. Not necessarily an issue in itself, but when you're sood on the tee any creeping uncertainty you feel is magnified along the shaft - at least that's how it feels. Looks wise the Burner's not going to win any beauty awards. It's a big ugly brute. Think prop forward rather than fly-half! I find the sheer size of the head can effect the swing particularly when it's very windy, it can be like having a kite on the other end of the shaft - but then that's the trade off - size of head = high MOI and energy to provide distance. In summary - it's a good driver, good performance, good distance and now (Sept 09) good prices available. If i was buying a driver now (10 months after re-taking up golf)  then i'd probably go for the R9 and take the sizeable hit in the wallet.

I had this club for about 4 months and during that time hit some fantastic drives, including driving our par 4 6th hole at 299 yds. However more often than not I was very wayward and a lot came down to the shaft length. At 46.25" I found it very hard to control and it felt like I was swinging a tennis ball on the end of a long rope! I think in the right hands this is an excellent club, very long and forgiving on off centre strikes, but for me at my height my new Callaway Big Bertha Diablo is much more suited to me.

i am new to golf, i have only been playing 6 months. i am a 28 handicapper and the first time i used this club i broke a 100 for the first time (99 on a par 71 course). it is so forgiving it is amazing. hitting it about 280 yards as apposed to about 220 yards with my old wilson deep red, and it lands on the fairway everytime not something which i am used to. would recommend this club to anyone who wants to improve their game. i can even play a fade and draw shot with this driver. i am now looking to get the new fairway woods and rescue clubs.
