What we say...

Wilson are unlike any other premium manufacturer in offering a genuinely budget range of clubs. Their marketers may have their work cut out, however, distinguishing between the low-priced Prostaff stuff and the soon-to-be released no-expense-spared Staff serious of equipment aimed at challenging the likes of Titleist, Callaway and TaylorMade.

These irons ‘do a job’, as they say, but they hardly set the world alight. The heads are enormous, offering loads of confidence at address, but there’s surprisingly little weight in the sole, making for middle-of-the-road feel and performance. With lots of offset in the heads, these are not the prettiest irons in the world – reaffirmed by the bizarre club-number lettering – and they’ll hardly be leaping off the pro-shop racks into your bag.

Having said that, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with these irons. They are just the sort of dependable, no-nonsense clubs a novice would be looking for. More consistent through the set than the ProPowers and with a slightly more oversized look than the Hippos and SkyMaxes, the Wilson Prostaffs would do many a budget conscious golfer proud. And they’re comfortably the cheapest irons here. But if it’s excitement you’re looking for, you may want to head elsewhere.

Verdict: The wholemeal alternative. Sensible, good for you – but perhaps not quite as tasty.
