What we say...
Signature oval depressions are now chemically milled straight into the face for a more controlled and consistent roll. A stabilising crossbar stiffens the face to improve sound and feel. The head weight can be adjusted from 340g to 360g via two sole weights positioned in the heel and toe.
This ‘Acid yellow’ colour scheme is something very different for Odyssey. You can see the different influences from other putters in the Odyssey line-up, it almost gives the Metal-X milled its own identity.
It doesn’t have an insert, but it feels like it has. I’ve always felt the ball stayed on the face too long and popped off with the White Hot insert, but having the milled holes in the face reduces the surface contact with the ball, so the sound is duller and the ball comes off more controlled. It certainly rolls out more than your average putter, but the feel is still soft. Having the adjustable sole weights allows you to find the right balance and weight for your stroke type and tempo.
Another great feature is consistent sound and feel you get across the face. If you catch it from the heel or toe, the sound doesn’t change and the ball still rolls true and holds its line from short range.
As reviewed in our 2014 Putters Test: Winner of our Gold Award. An excellent combination of head and neck make for a clean look and easy-to-align putter for neutral to right-aim biased players. Nice feel off the face with a confidence-inspiring sound when struck. Performed solidly in all aspects. Came off the face hotter than many others on test so had to adjust for that initially. Making a shorter swing helped me start the ball online on shorter putts. Loved the design, colour scheme and being able to add weight to the clubhead. Excellent feel, soft but assured, seemed to roll earlier on the green than others, really hugging the surface.
These putters put a really true roll on the ball that everyone can benefit from. The six head shapes available offer enough choice to cater for every stroke type.
