What we say...

TaylorMade’s initial foray into this area of the putter market was with the Monza, a big black triangular beast with two red pipes offering both an alignment guide and a back-weighting system. While the Monza had – and still has – its fans, feedback from TaylorMade’s tour pros suggested they’d prefer a version that was more compact and less, well, black. Hence, the Mezza, 15% smaller than the Monza and an unusual silvery colour.

Like TM’s other Rossa putters, the Mezza features a red ‘titallium’ insert, which can take a bit of getting used to. It’s a little harder that most inserts, which many golfers will like, bit is also smaller than some, which can lead to inconsistent feel if you’re liable to strike too many putts of the toe or heel.

The Mezza will suit those who want to dip a toe into back-weighted waters, but are put off by some of the more outlandish designs. Its relatively modest head size and uncomplicated look make it an easy putter to like. On the other hand, the performance benefits might be less dramatic than from some of its more exotic rivals.
