What we say...

The result of several years’ work by putting guru Scotty Cameron, the Futura has divided opinions ever since it first appeared 18 months or so ago, and there’s no reason to suppose that will change now we’re all more used to it.

One of the TG test team loved it to bits, the other hand reservations (particularly about its size and rather dead sound at impact) – and that mixed reaction is likely to be repeated wherever the Futura is picked up. In fact, it’s the sort of putter with which even its owner is likely to fall in and out of love. (Which may be why Phil Mickelson has been known to ditch is from time to time.) Bear that in mind before splashing out £200 on one.

What even the Futura’s detractors will admit, is that it’s one of those rare flat-sticks that can actually improve your putting. It’s dead easy to aim at the hole, it encourages a simple pendulum swing, its exaggerated alignment guide lets you know immediately when you’ve come across the line and its perfect weighting makes long lag putts a doddle. Try it – you might be surprised.

It’s expensive, it’s not to everyone’s taste, but there are not many club golfers who wouldn’t take fewer putts using the Futura.
