What we say...

Despite its looks being disliked by all, it received a big thumbs up from our amateurs for sand performance.

Specialist by name, Specialist by nature. The Essex-based company only make hand-crafted forged wedges, so if you’re a wedge obsessive, they’re well worth investigating. They even offer a ‘Bespoke Fitting’ service allowing you to have wedges made to your exact specifications.

Everything about these wedges is distinctive, including the curvy, egg-shaped head. If you like your golf clubs with straight edges these aren’t for you. Next on the list of unique features is the extra-long hosel, which specialists say allow them to place more weight in the heel to prevent the face closing at impact, and which is surprisingly disconcerting for a while.

Performance-wise, the Specialist wedges work a treat. The sand wedge sliced through bunkers better than any club in this test, and the forged feel at impact is delicious both around the green and on fuller approach shots. As an added bonus, the design of the head makes it easy to open the face for high floaters.

One thing worth pointing out is that both Specialist wedges came up significantly shorter than their rivals on full shots. Yes they flew high with noticeable backspin, and proper golfers will be more concerned with consistency than distance, but higher handicappers might prefer something with a bit more ‘pop’.

Verdict: A genuine treat for good golfers who like the idea of a wedge hand-crafted by experts in the field.

Specialist Wedges User Reviews

  • 5 out of 5 Knocked shots off my short game!

    By Mr Messy

I've got 3 of these wedges now, one to replace the PW that came with my irons, a 56 degree SW and a a 60 degree LW. All of them are great to use and have knocked shots off my game. These clubs feel great and work well and just fill me with confidence. I used to fear going in bunkers but now sand shots are almost enjoyable. I personally love the looks as well, but that's a matter of opinion. These clubs are staying in the bag for ever as far as I'm concerned.
