Mottram Hall: Sir Alex Ferguson’s home course

Published:

One of the QHotelsgroup’s leading venues, Mottram Hall has bags of pedigree.

Built in 1721 on an estate that traces back to the 14th Century, the Georgian country house was converted to an hotel in 1940 and is a listed building.

Handily located in leafy Cheshire within striking distance of Manchester, the venue has gone up a notch since both the hotel and course underwent a £6m refurbishment.

Regularly used for lming for TV series ‘Real Cheshire Housewives’, it is also home to Cheshire’s oldest Oak Tree (over 475 years) while former Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is honorary captain of the golf club.

● On-course

Opened in 1991, the par-72 championship layout is at and relatively open on the front nine but is tree-lined and undulating on the most aesthetically-pleasing back nine.

The Dave Thomas-designed course is considered one of the county’s most challenging layouts and proved as much a couple of years ago when it hosted many of Europe’s leading senior golfers.

Indeed the course has thrived since a major upgrade prior to the staging of the 2013 ISPS HANDA PGA Seniors Championship.

Another major change saw the introduction of a stream running across the fairway short of the demanding par-4 penultimate hole.

But the toughest hole is the stroke index 1 13th, which requires two ne shots to stand any chance of nding another elevated green.

The front nine nishes with a pair of par 5s and is where you should be looking to score.

The Carrington Grill is the main restaurant while more informal dining can be enjoyed in the clubhouse’s Claret Jug Bar and Restaurant.
