La Cala Resort in Mijas, Málaga has been voted the best golf resort in the southern Spanish region of Andalucía by a panel of industry experts.

The award was one of five presented during the inaugural Andalusian Golf Awards, organised by the prestigious industry publication, Andalucía Golf.

Miguel Ángel Jimenéz and Azahara Muñoz were adjudged the best golfers in 2008, Valderrama received the award as the best course and its owner, Jaime Patiño, received a lifetime achievement award for his contribution to golf in the region.

The regional government and local tourism board in the Costa del Sol also received awards in recognition of their work in promotion of the golf industry.

La Cala Resort is the biggest golf resort in Spain with three 18-hole courses and a six-hole par 3 course. It is owned by the Irish company, FBD Holdings plc.

La Cala’s Managing Director, Denis Foley, said he was delighted to accept the award on behalf of the resort. “As Spain’s largest golf resort, we are very aware of our role in the promotion of the industry in the region. We have always tried to promote junior golf, as today’s juniors are the future of the sport.

“We always try to give the best, most professional service to all our customers as the key is to get golfers to return to La Cala and to Andalucía. I would like to give credit to our staff whose professionalism is evidenced by the number of return customers to the complex.”

Besides 60 holes of golf, La Cala has an impressive spa and a wide range of sporting facilities including a full-size football pitch that has attracted many professional football teams.
