New pairs event set for Scotland

A new golf event for amateur golfers across the country is coming to Angus and East Perthshire.

The Scottish Golf Pairs Challenge was launched at Blairgowrie Golf Club and helping to do so were 2009 Walker Cup player and recent winner of the Irish Amateur Championship, Gavin Dear, and former Scottish Amateur Strokeplay and Match Play Champion, Kevin McAlpine.

The event will be held between September 5-10 and is intended to showcase the magnificent golfing territory in this region of Scotland.

A partnership of the participating courses was successful in securing funding from the European Regional Development Fund, enabling the group to launch the event.

Alan Graham, Events and Tourism Manager for Perth and Kinross Council, said they were “pleased to support this initiative.”

The betterball strokeplay event with a prize fund of £2,500 will be played over five days, over five courses – Alyth, Blairgowrie (Rosemount), Glenisla, Kirriemuir and Strathmore.

Alistair Gibb, chairman of the Scottish Golf Pairs Challenge said:  “This is a fine example of local tourism and golf clubs coming together to form a successful partnership to encourage future growth in forthcoming years”.
