Fooball fans taking in the sumptuous surroundings of Golf Son Gual, Mallorca’s top golf course, were left reaching for their autograph books when a group from Sky Sports, including many ex-pro’s, turned up on an end-of-season trip.

The visit to Son Gual was organised by former Spurs, Liverpool and England midfielder Jamie Redknapp, a regular visitor to the venue, and his group included former Arsenal striker Alan Smith and ex-Scotland internationals Andy Gray, Graeme Sharp, Charlie Nicholas and Alan McInally, who made off with the day’s trophy.

Members at Son Gual were not fazed by the influx of familiar faces, however, as the club – which recently hosted the inaugural Son Gual Mallorca Senior Open won by former Ryder Cup captain Mark James – has a burgeoning reputation as the holiday island’s best course and is the chosen destination of many of Mallorca’s best-known visitors.

An early exit from the French Open tennis championship enabled world number one Rafael Nadal, who was born in Mallorca, to pop in for a quick round with friends and family just the day after the Sky visit.

And one of Nadal’s predecessors at the top of the tennis tree, German superstar Boris Becker, has also been known to pop in for a round.

British celebrities – including Goldenballs star Jasper Carrott – can often be spotted playing 18 holes during a visit to the island.

It has even been rumoured that Hollywood’s golden golfing couple, Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta Jones, who have a villa on the island, are considering taking out a membership.

Memberships are sold by debentures, which are valid for life, transferable and cover spouse and all children under 21 years. Prices are available on application.
