Golfers eager to be the first to play Ireland’s newest golfing masterpiece, The Faldo Course at Lough Erne Golf Resort in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland, can now book online as the countdown to the opening on July 1st 2009 gets underway.

Created by six-time major champion Nick Faldo this 7,261 yard Par 72 course is set on a breathtaking peninsula between Lower Lough Erne and Castle Hume Lough, and is already being talked about as an obvious venue for future European Tour events.

With about 100 days to the official opening of The Championship Faldo Course, the Resort’s official representative at world-wide tournaments Rory McIlroy is really relishing the opportunity play the full 18 holes.

In fact it was revealed today (wed) he will take on Ireland’s greatest ever golfer, three times Major Champion, Padraig Harrington in a special event at Lough Erne just after The Open at Turnberry.

The inaugural Lough Erne Challenge is a one day event to be staged on Wednesday July 22nd and will be a stroke play “head to head” between McIlroy and Harrington who, the previous week, will have attempted to secure a hat-trick of Open Championships at Turnberry in Scotland. 

A fund of $300,000 will add to the competition between the established figure of Harrington and McIlroy who is widely recognised as the brightest talent to emerge in world golf since Tiger Woods.  A limit of 4,000 tickets has been set for the event.  

The current World No.17  and  2009 Dubai Classic Champion recently said:“I’m really looking forward to playing The Faldo Course. I’ve seen it develop into an outstanding championship layout in superb condition and I know it will be on the must-play list for all golfers in Ireland, as well as all golfers coming to Ireland.”
