Swans fly back to Ely

The 18 hole course at Ely City GC was designed by Henry Cotton and built by Alex Swan in the early 70s.

Now the second and third generation Swans in the profession, Howard and William, return to the famous Cambridgeshire cathedral city to help the club take the course forward into the next decade.

Over those 37 years of its existence, the course has undergone some changes, but of a relatively minor nature, and the Cotton/Swan project remains much as it was.

However, as with many courses, it has not moved with the times as technology has advanced and so will receive a full design appraisal and look to raising its bar in the Club’s ten year business and development plan.

William Swan says:”I am looking forward greatly to working on the course built by my grandfather in just one of the many he worked on with Mr. Cotton.

“I believe that we can bring Ely City to the modern day in terms of strategic improvement, challenge and performance and point it successfully into the future.”

The Swan Golf Designs appraisal of the course will be undertaken throughout January and will set out design revisions to the course, particularly that of bunkering, and identify priorities and a programme for the renovation project.

The work at Ely joins newly commissioned renovations at Hornsea Golf Club, Yorkshire, Galgorm Castle and Helen’s Bay in Northern Ireland.
