Montrose stages 25-hole Open

Golfers from across the UK, and a sprinkling from further afield, will be competing in Royal Montrose Golf Club’s Bicentenary 25-Hole Open this Sunday.

This will be only the second time a golf open has been held over 25 holes rather than the customary 18.

The first 25-hole golf open was held almost 150 years ago, when the top 12 golfers of the 1860s battled it out across 8,000 yards of the Montrose Links, the longest course ever played in a professional golf tournament.

As part of Royal Montrose Golf Club’s bicentenary celebrations, 21st century golfers will be re-enacting this marathon competition, including two direct descendants of the winner of the first 25-Hole Open, golfing legend William Doleman.

Stuart Benson, the great-great grandson of William Doleman, and his daughter Nicole, William’s great-great-great granddaughter, have both entered the event and are hoping to repeat their ancestor’s success at the 1866 25-Hole Open, when he beat Willie Park by 112 strokes to 115.

Royal Montrose Golf Club’s bicentenary celebrations are taking place throughout 2010 and are supported by Angus Council through Carnoustie Country, which promotes the golf courses in and around Angus.

Montrose is a star of 2-FORE!-1 GOLF with both its Medal and Broomfield courses offering half-price green fees in midweek – provided you’ve got a 2-FORE!-1 voucher of course.
