Chart Hills triumph in Portugal

Four members from Chart Hills Golf Club in Kent have just taken first place in the grand final of the Macmillan Longest Day Challenge in Portugal.

The challenge itself is run by Macmillan every year and asks golfers to complete 4 rounds of golf on one day and raise funds while doing so.

The top four teams from around the UK, with a combined best score and the highest amount raised, were then invited to take part in the final competition at the Boavista Golf Resort in Portugal.

Chart Hills quartet – Simon Wilding, Ian Rutland, Martin Pawley and Cormac McCarthy – flew out to Portugal and fought off stiff competition from the three other teams of finalists to win overall with 94 points, 13 points clear of their nearest rivals.

Simon Wilding, who captained the team, said: “We are all avid golfers and of course wanted to raise funds for Macmillan. The fact that our team won in the final is really great news but not the reason we took part.

“We were one of 4 teams participating on the day of the first round at Chart Hills and I believe that overall the amount raised at Chart Hills for Macmillan was in excess of £10,000.”

Sarah Saunders, Chart Hills’s Sales and Marketing Manager, is extremely proud of the team. She commented: “All of the teams did fantastically well on the longest day and we are so grateful that they made such an effort for Macmillan, which is also our Captains’ charity this year.”

In 2009, 319 teams took part in the challenge and over £360,000 was raised to help people with cancer in the UK.
