91 holes in a day for Seve Foundation…

Four intrepid golfers have just completed a 91 hole-in-day marathon at superstar 2-FORE!-1 venue St Mellion, Cornwall, in aid of the Seve Ballesteros Foundation.

David Moon PGA (Golf Operations Manager), Darren Gass PGA (Performance Coach) , Chris Pountney (St Mellion Club Captain) and Jon Behennah (Vice-Captain) started their challenge at 5am, a  welcome bacon roll helping to send them on their way!

The main aim of the day was to play 91 holes to celebrate the late great Seve’s 91 event wins.

The quartet started at first light and played their way around the new Kernow Course at St Mellion for the first 72-holes with the incentive of trying to make as many birdies as possible – a local business and former owners of St Mellion W.H. Bond & Son had offered to donate more money for every birdie earned.

The weather was generally kind although the 3rd round started and finished with the rain lashing down and although the birdies dried up (ironic) the four-ball played on and on… and on!

Said Moon: “The final 19 holes (played the 18th twice) were on the stunning Nicklaus Course, which I am sure Jack himself would acknowledge being a fan of Seve (Seve also won at St Mellion in 1994) that his course would be a fitting way to complete this challenge.

“More and more supporters turned up including the families of the group and with the assistance of the St Mellion Artisans donations were being made even out on the course.”

At 9.15pm the final hole saw the 4-ball play a Texas Scramble and with some tired limbs and bodies they summoned up the energy to finish in the fading light and 16-hours after starting with the fairway lined by spectators to great applause.

Due to the kindness of St Mellion’s Corporate members, members and lifelong friends of this very special venue over £3,500 has been raised so far.
