Ex-Saints star makes Trilby Tour bow

Former Southampton goalkeeper and Welsh international Paul Jones is to compete in the Regional Championship Final of the 2011 Trilby Tour on July 21st over the award winning Downs Course at Goodwood – recently voted 77th in Golf World Magazine’s Top 100 English Courses.

The 44 year old Felpham based golfer picked up a club for the first time just five years ago but is already playing off an impressive nine handicap and hoping to reduce it further throughout the rest of the Summer.

Paul who amassed 50 caps for Wales during an illustrious 20 year career will join more than 120 amateur golfers in this one day televised golf event at historic Golf At Goodwood in what is widely acclaimed to be golf’s answer to Twenty20 cricket.

He recently said: “I play in quite a lot of charity golf days including The Variety Club Golf Society but this will certainly be the biggest individual event I have competed in so i have been putting in a lot of practice and as Goodwood is my home club I hope to have an added advantage”.

This highly popular tournament was created by Menswear Designer William Hunt to give amateur golfers across England, Ireland and Scotland the chance to emulate their sporting heroes and play in a national televised tournament (Sky Sports) under similar pressures of a professional tour event.

This year more than 1,200 golfers have entered the nine regional finals around the UK, many of which are sold out due to the growing demand for this unique Stableford event.

Last year’s National Champion was Golf At Goodwood Member Chris Dyson and Paul is hoping to emulate his fellow club Member and retain the trophy for the home side.

The former Saints star is also taking on another mammoth golf challenge next month when he attempts to play four courses in one day to raise funds for the Chestnut Tree House Childrens Hospice in Arundel.

This is the second successive year the event has taken place and Paul is hoping to beat last year’s figure of £6,000 raised on the day. The event is to be held on Monday 15th August starting at 6am over the Downs Course and Park Course at Goodwood.
