McIlroy wins Shanghai Masters

Rory McIlroy overcame a nervy final-day front nine to defeat Anthony Kim in a play-off to win the Shangai Masters.

The US Open Champion claimed the £1.24m first prize at the event, which is not sanctioned by a major tour.

American Hunter Mahan and South Korea’s Noh Seung-yul finished equal third at 13-under.

Englishman Lee Westwood fired a hole-in-one and five birdies on the final day en route to a 67 and a fifth-place finish at 12-under par.

Memories of McIlroy’s collapse at the Masters earlier this year came flooding back after the Northern Irishman squandered a three-shot lead on the front nine.

But the World No.3 recovered with a birdie at the 15th and despite missing an eight-foot putt to win on the 18th, held his nerve on the first play-off hole, getting up-and-down from the greenside trap to win.

“I’ve been close in two or three tournaments and had two thirds and two seconds and was finally able to get myself over the line today,” said McIlroy.

“This was the third play-off of my career, and I was able to win this one, so at least my record in these events is getting better. I am just delighted to get another win.”
