*PGA National at The Belfry, West Midlands – A worthy no.2 course to the world-famous Brabazon Ryder Cup track. It was created by Dave Thomas and is arguably an even tougher, more intimidating layout. It’s a severe test of inland links-style golf with its battery of bunkers, firm, fast running fairways and huge undulating greens.
*Scarborough South Cliff, North Yorks – Home of an impressive parkland/clifftop combination with a homely clubhouse overlooking the 18th green.
*The Tytherington, Cheshire – Although still relatively new – it opened in 1986 – it is widely regarded as one of Cheshire’s most challenging tracks. Plotted on gently undulating parkland, it winds its way through mature woodland and features over 100 bunkers and eight water hazards.
*The Mendip, Somerset – Sumptuous Somerset scenery surrounds this well established upland track. Long par 4s are a mark of its challenge as well as small greens that are difficult to attack so you can’t afford to get too distracted by the wonderful vistas – you can see seven counties and the Bristol Channel from its highest point at 960ft!
*Okehampton, Devon – You’ll discover this little cracker in the heart of delightful Devon, sheltered by the high tors of Dartmoor. Plotted on undulating ground, the course plays like a parkland although it actually sits on moorland. Several interesting holes will capture the imagination, none more so than the 94-yards par-3 12th.
*Crowborough Beacon, East Sussex – Excellent, mature heathland course is close to the highest point in Sussex and, being nearly 800ft above sea level, you’re treated to spectacular South Downs vistas.
