* Gleneagles (Queen’s course), Perthshire, Scotland –  it may be regarded as the third of the trio of Gleneagles courses but the Queen’s is an absolute gem and classic in its own right. The par-66 may lack yardage alongside its two superstar neighbours – the King’s and the PGA Centenary – but majestically manoeuvres through an idyllic setting.

* The Machrie, Isle of Islay – right up there with Scotland’s legendary links courses. At just over 6,000 yards the course isn’t long but there’s no doubt the Machrie can be a beast as well as a beauty when the wind is blowing.

*Northop G&CC, Flintshire, Wales – home of a striking Georgian-style clubhouse, as well as a superb John Jacobs-designed  parkland course.

*Portal (Championship course), Cheshire – one of the north west’s finest stay and play venues, Portal is nothing short of a golfing paradise. You’ll find two quality 18 hole courses, a nine-hole par-30 layout and one of Europe’s largest indoor golf centres plus a four star Macdonald hotel.

*Meyrick Park, Dorset – set in 120 acres of scenic undulating parkland in the seaside town of Bournemouth and memorably starts with a 244-yards par-3.

*North Shore, Lincs – literally down the road and coast from Skegness and provides superb holiday golf. A splendid James Braid parkland/links combo.
