2-FORE!-1 six of the best

There are about 1,000 courses in 2-FORE!-1 and offer half-price greens fees (with a 2-FORE!-1 voucher) and once again here are six of the very best…

*Musselburgh Old Links, East Lothian – If you enjoy your golfing history, you’ll love ancient Musselburgh to bits. The place is simply steeped in it. Forget St Andrews, this is where golf first started: it’s officially recognised as the oldest golf course in the world – the game was played on Musselburgh Links as early as 1672 although Mary Queen of Scots reputedly played there in 1567. The magical, mystical nine hole links has staged six Open Championships.

*Guildford, Surrey – Founded in 1886, Guildford is the oldest course in Surrey and is probably the driest – the downland layout rolls over chalk-based terrain so your virtually guaranteed a game. The short par-4 4th is the highest point of the course with stunning views beyond four counties.

*Windermere, Cumbria – A picture postcard course well worth visiting. It’s arguably one of the country’s most scenic tracks and boasts splendid USGA spec greens.

*Walmer & Kingsdown, Kent – It’ll take your breath away and not just because this clifftop layout is perched high above the English Channel – on a clear day you can see the French coast 24 miles away.

*The Belfry (PGA National), West Midlands – Everybody wants to play the neighbouring Brabazon course, but the US-style PGA National is a class act in its own right and would be a no. 1 layout at most venues.

*Hexham, Northumberland – A traditional parkland course on fast-draining land on the south side of the Tyne, Hexham is a tough enough test of golf to regularly host county events.
