It’s that time of the week again when we reveal six more of the best 2-FORE!-1 courses where you can use that precious 2-FORE!-1 voucher in style. So here we go then…
*Gleneagles (PGA Centenary), Perthshire, Scotland – will stage the Ryder Cup in 2014 and will almost certainly produce another memorable encounter.
But the layout will have undergone major surgery since Jack Nicklaus’s original design and before Europe and the US do battle. The Golden Bear declared: “This is the finest parcel of land in the world I’ve ever been given to work with”.
It may lack the charm and character of the neighbouring King’s and Queen’s courses, but the PGA is nevertheless a stunning track. The par-5s are particularly strong with the right dogleg 9th and 16th standing out.
*Carden Park (Nicklaus course), Cheshire – another stunning Nicklaus track, this time in the heart of scenic Cheshire. However, it’s a fair test but by no means the most daunting of the Golden Bear’s tracks.
As with most Nicklaus courses you need to use all your golfing nous to get round, specially at the 7th and 15th two fairways are in play.
Pick of the holes though is the 17th, a stunning sweeping par-4 dogleg flanked by a lake on the left with the green right in front of the hotel.
*Montrose Medal, Angus, Scotland – it’s up the coast from Carnoustie, and is similarly steeped in history. Regularly stages final qualifying.
*Tenby, Pembrokeshire – quality links believed to be Wales’ oldest course and boasting some of the quickest, truest greens you’re ever likely to putt on.
*Crowborough Beacon, East Sussex – excellent, mature heathland course is close to the highest point in the county and, being nearly 800ft above sea level, you’re treated to spectacular South Downs vistas.
*Perranporth, Cornwall – dramatically overlooks the town’s golden sandy beach and is a James Braid seaside gem, impressively picking up after a fairly straightforward downhill par-4 start.
