Whitby, North Yorks – You get the best of both golfing worlds at Whitby – a cracking combination off 11 clifftop and seven parkland holes.
*Temple Newsam, West Yorks – The proud Leeds home of two top value municipal layouts, Lord Irwin and Lady Dorothy. In fact Leeds City Council-run Temple Newsam is the largest municipal golfing venue for 100 miles.
*Montrose, Angus, Scotland – A links with plenty of pedigree…and history to match.True, it’s somewhat overshadowed by Angus neighbour Carnoustie though Montrose’s marvellous Medal Course has staged final qualifying when the 1999 and 2006 Opens have been played just down the coast.
*Buxton & High Peak, Derbys – It may be on the short side, but the home of the oldest club in Derbyshire is impressively set 1,100ft above sea level and therefore somewhat exposed to the elements.
*Lyme Regis, Dorset – This clifftop cracker is usually in tip-top condition wahtever the time of year with temporary greens a rarity.
*Weston-Super-Mare, Somerset – Flat, easy-walking links with a great set of greens and like Lyme Regis very much playable all-year round.
