*Selsdon Park, Surrey – You’ll find this impressive layout 12 miles from the centre of London in a serene setting of 250 acres of spectacular rolling parkland, the 18-hole championship golf course sharing star billing with an on-site hotel housed in a neo-Jacobean building with a history dating as far back as 861AD.
*Dalmahoy (East Course), Edinburgh – The James Braid-designed East Course is one of Scotland’s longest layouts and is widely regarded as one of the best inland tracks north of the border.
It’s the scene of Europe’s famous Solheim Cup triumph over America in 1992 and, is set in 1,000 acres of wonderfully undulating wooded parkland with stunning views of the nearby Pentland Hills.
*Lytham Green Drive, Lancs – Living in the shadow of the illustrious Royal Lytham Open Championship venue, this Blackpool track misses out on the credit it would surely receive in other parts of the country.
It’s an intriguing parkland challenge – water comes into play on at least six holes while bunkers play a vital role in protecting the par-3s.
*Lyme Regis, Dorset – Classy clifftop track with views to match, Lyme Regis is one of the hidden gems of the south west.
The par 71 layout is perched high on the cliffs and you’ll quite literally be blown away by the outstanding coastal views to Portland Bill and looking down to the historic town and World Heritage Site of Lyme Regis itself.
*Rowlands Castle, Hampshire – Set in woodland in a quiet corner of Hampshire, the course is fairly flat and longer than it first appears. The downhill par-4 13th is a memorable hole across a gully and through an avenue of trees to a two-tiered green.
*Tewkesbury Park, Glos – There are some driveable par-4s but generally-speaking good course management and percentage golf is key to a good score here.
