The Belfry Prepares For Ryder Cup Boom

The Belfry, four-time host of the Ryder Cup, is giving golfers a once-in-a-lifetime  chance to play the iconic Brabazon course for the first time with the same final day pin positions that were set for Europe’s famous victory over the US in 2002.

For the next two weekends until this year’s contest finishes at Medinah Country Club in Chicago on Sunday 30 September, amateur players will be able to take on the exact hole positions that lit-up Europe’s final day triumph ten years ago.

These include the back-right placement on the 16th – scene of Philip Price’s monster putt to beat Phil Mickelson – and the central-tier position on the 18th where Paul McGinley memorably sealed victory with a putt across the undulating green.

“This special Brabazon set-up is as close to the Ryder Cup conditions as club golfers will ever experience – and at no extra charge,” said Director of Golf, Gary Silcock. “As well as the testing pin positions, the greens are now measuring at a very similar speed to the matches a decade ago, so it really does offer the ultimate Ryder Cup experience during the next two Saturdays and Sundays.”

Led by Sam Torrance, Europe won the 34th Ryder Cup by 15½ points to 12½ at The Belfry, helped by victories in the singles matches from Colin Montgomerie, Bernhard Langer, Padraig Harrington, Thomas Bjorn and Price. Europe also won the event at The Belfry back in 1985 and retained the trophy in 1989, before a star-studded US team led by Tom Watson won in 1993.
