New Centurion Club makes a flying start

It’s been a sizzling first summer in more ways than one at England’s newest course, the members-only Centurion Club near St Albans, which opened in July.

The Club’s 7,064-yard course has already been described as a “modern classic” and has created so much interest that membership sales are well ahead of target.

“July 1st was a proud day for all of us,” confirmed Managing Director, Scott Evans, who, together with Chairman Graham Wildish, and Dutch business men Bert Pronk and André Hendriks, purchased the property three years ago with the intention of turning it into one of the leading private members’ clubs in the south east of England.

“We’ve been very pleased with the feedback we have been receiving since our membership sales office opened last October,” he added. “Interest in the Club is very high and membership continues to build at a pace.

“We always said that our location would be one of our biggest plus points and that has been borne out by the fact that we’ve been attracting members from north and central London, Middlesex and all over Hertfordshire.”

Wildish, Pronk and Hendriks, all having extensive business backgrounds working in the pharmaceutical, construction and manufacturing industries while Scotsman, Evans, brings 25 years of experience in golf club management at the likes of Troon Golf Club in Arizona, Dubai Creek, Loch Lomond, Bearwood Lakes and The London Club.

One of the owners’ first decisions was to entrust acclaimed architect Simon Gidman, a former President of the European Institute of Golf Course Architects, with the task of building a top quality course and he has not disappointed.

The new course meanders through woodland and over parkland and provides golfers with breath-taking views over the scenic Hertfordshire countryside. Each hole has its own individual character while the par-5 18th hole is destined to become regarded as one of the most memorable finishing holes in golf.

The Club is currently offering three different memberships categories: Senate, Centurion and Corporate. Prospective members can contact the Club on 01442 510520 or visit www.centurionclub.co.uk for more information.
