2-FORE!-1 Six of the Best

Published:

The new year is nearly upon us and you can start 2014 in style at these super six 2-FORE!-1 venues which all offer a memorable golfing experience and, thanks to 2-FORE!-1, you won’t have to break the bank to tee it up. Another major plus is that they’re all year-round venues too so they’re bound to be in good condition…

*Forest Pines (pictured), Lincs – The pride resort of the Q Hotels group, this venue has come on leaps and bounds – on and off the course – since opening in 1996. Dubbed the ‘Woburn of the North’ and designed by John Morgan, the venue for several big events offers golfers three sets of nine holes in between majestic timber and into open heathland.

*Mere, Cheshire (pictured) – A class Cheshire act – on and off the course. The 1930s James Braid/George Duncan-designed undulating parkland layout is now overlooked by a luxury hotel and spa which opened last year. No wonder it’s regarded as the ‘Wentworth of the North.’

*Celtic Manor (Roman Road course), South Wales – It may be now overshadowed by the Ryder Cup-staging Twenty Ten, but the Roman Road has hosted three Wales Opens and offers a superb collection of holes, particularly the 8th and 14th, along with a memorable finale.

*Moor Allerton, West Yorks – Has the distinction of being the first course in Britain designed by top US architect Robert Trent Jones and has 27 holes in three loops of nine.

*The Shire, Herts – The late great Seve’s only UK legacy in course design is here on a once boring piece of farmland in North London. Ballesteros has created a spectacular layout with water features aplenty, including a Sawgrass replica.

*Heysham, Lancs – A lengthy, challenging parkland layout with a selection of 400-yards plus par-4s as well as several water hazards, ditches and ponds to negotiate.
