*Guildford, Surrey – Founded in 1886, Guildford is the oldest course in Surrey and is one of the driest – the downland layout rolls over chalk-based terrain so you’re virtually guaranteed a game. The short par-4 4th is the highest point of the course and on a clear day offers stunning views of four counties.
*Linden Hall, Northumberland – This impressive Macdonald hotels venue is well worth pencilling into your diary for the new season. It’s a mature parkland layout and you have to deal with a double dogleg par-5 finale to a green surrounded by water as well as a cracking quartet of par-3s.
*Carlyon Bay, Cornwall – Dramatically perched high on the cliffs at St Austell, Carlyon is an outstanding clifftop and parkland golf combination. Most of the thrills and spills are experienced on the clifftop on the front nine and around the turn – the 10th is a sensational par-5 with an elevated tee and drop fairway. The coastal views are simply out of this world and will take your breath away.
*Ballater, Scotland – There is a score of good courses along Royal Deeside and Ballater is one of the best. Playing over a flat plain next to the River Dee, it’s a surprisingly diverse, testing challenge.
*Bedale, North Yorks – One of the oldest courses in North Yorkshire and is as picturesque as they come – the gateway to the Yorkshire Dales in fact.
*Morley Hayes, Derbys – Impressive all round modern golf centre comprising on-site accommopdation with the main parkland layout backed up by while the nine-hole Tower course, ideal for novices and juniors.
