Top Cheshire 2-FORE!-1 venue The Mere is marking its first birthday celebrations following its resort status with the unveiling of a new Golf Academy.

Graham Neville, the resort’s assistant PGA Professional will work under the stewardship of Darren Cain, Senior PGA Golf Instructor, to introduce a host of new golf tuition opportunities, focusing on developing both junior and adult golf coaching.

This announcement is the culmination of a year of golfing highlights for the award-winning 18-hole golf course which include over 30,000 rounds of golf played, six holes-in-one scored and a staggering 198,000 balls hit into The Mere lake (the venue’s unique driving range) and 2,100 buggies used over the course of the year!

The resort has also attracted some of the region’s leading sporting figures, including Liverpool FC captain Steven Gerrard who hosted his first UK charity golf day at The Mere for his charity The Steven Gerrard Foundation.

“Given our golf pedigree, we’re working hard to ensure that our resort continues to offer the best golfing experience in the North West. Our new Golf Academy is designed to offer the highest quality tuition and coaching to our region’s next generation of golfers, as well as skill-up existing players.

“We were delighted to secure an extension from the R&A as an official qualifying course for The Open Championship and feedback from members and guests have been extremely positive about the reasons why The Mere is their choice of resort for playing golf specifically,” commented Joe Gates, Golf Operations Manager at The Mere Golf Resort & Spa.

Said Mark Boler, co-owner and founder of The Mere: “We remain focused on pushing the barriers in rolling out new initiatives to continue to delight our guests and members and ensure we retain and grow our loyal following.

“Golf remains at the heart of our business and there will be a number of new developments to retain our position as the premier golf venue in the region. There is still a lot more to do and we relish the challenge of delivering an even bigger and better second year as a golf resort.”

The resort is expanding its service and offering to guests in additional areas. The Mere’s golf offering now boasts its own concierge service and tailored play packages.

The independently owned resort is now becoming one of the most widely acclaimed residential venues in the North West and has also won or been short-listed for several industry awards including winning the ‘5 Bubbles Award’ for customer service from Spa Breaks.com, awarded a prestigious AA rosette for its Browns restaurant and shortlisted for Cheshire Life’s Hotel of the Year as well.

Meanwhile, The Mere recently announced the appointment of seasoned golf professional, Alastair Saunders, as new Assistant Golf Operations Manager.

Saunders will be responsible for developing golf operations and new customer service programmes as the resort unveils a host of new initiatives designed to showcase the award-winning course and drive an increase in golf membership.

He joins The Mere from Links, Hope Island Golf Resort, in Australia. Prior to this, he worked in several golf resorts in the UK including Kent venues Cobtree Manor and Sheerness GC and Dale Hill in East Sussex. Saunders will report to Joe Gates, Golf Operations Manager, who heads up all golf activity at the resort.
