South Wales club receives £50,000 boost

One of Merthyr Tydfil’s oldest sports clubs – Merthyr Tydfil (Cilsanws) Golf Club – is securing its immediate future through a £50,000 boost from an initiative rejuvenating the South Wales valleys.

The club is being awarded the funding from the EU-supported South East Wales Community Economic Development (SEWCED) programme.

The investment will see improvements made to course and clubhouse also result in more members and visitors, increasing turnover and moving towards sustainability.

Delivered by a six-partner local authorities’ consortium of Merthyr Tydfil, Bridgend, Blaenau Gwent, Caerphilly, Rhondda Cynon Taff and Torfaen, the £13.5 million SEWCED programme is supported by the European Regional Development Fund through the Welsh Government.

Founded in 1908, Merthyr Tydfil Golf Club in Cefn Coed is a mountaintop course in the Brecon Beacons National Park, with some of its fairways 1,000ft or more above sea level and taking in the beauty of Cilsanws Mountain, a Site of Special Scientific Interest and important archaeological history.

The grant will help update old and unreliable machinery – such as a tractor – used to maintain the golf course, give the clubhouse kitchen a complete overhaul to cope with demands for meals, and provide new lockers and safety flooring in the locker room and new carpeting in the lounge.

The club currently has around 100 members, including juniors and ladies, and its 80-people capacity clubhouse lounge is used for functions such as weddings and major club events.
