Trump savours victory… and defeat

It’s been a mixed week on this side of the Atlantic for golf-loving American billionaire Donald Trump.

On the plus side Trump came to the rescue of the spectacular but financially troubled Doonbeg Golf Club (pictured) in County Clare, Ireland. The acquisition, which was highly sought after by many major hotel and golf companies, marks the 16th golf club in the Trump Portfolio and the first Trump Hotel Collection property in Ireland.

On the debit side he has put his plans to build a resort at Trump International Golf Links in Aberdeen on hold after it was decided to go ahead with the proposed offshore wind turbine project.

Trump is down but definitely not out though he stressed: “We will appeal this decision and in the meantime we will be focusing all of our investment and energy towards our new acquisition on the Atlantic Ocean in Ireland.”

However, a Trump Organidation statement added: “Today’s decision has not altered our unwavering commitment to protect our investment in Scotland. We are reviewing Lord Doherty’s decision and will pursue the legal options available to us as recommended by our Counsel.

“Communities world-wide continue to challenge the destructive proliferation of wind turbines and we will remain a fierce opponent at the forefront of this battle. Despite today’s decision, the EOWDC proposal has numerous economic and legal obstacles that will ultimately prevent its construction.”

The Donald is excited about his Doonbeg acquisition, saying: “I am thrilled to announce that we have purchased yet another incredible golf resort. From Trump National Doral, Miami to Trump International Golf Links, Scotland, known as “the greatest golf course in the world,” we only have the best.

“Doonbeg is an already terrific property that we will make even better — it will soon be an unparalleled resort destination with the highest standards of luxury.”

Doonbeg, to be renamed Trump International Golf Links, Ireland, is situated on over 400-acres fronting for 2 ½ miles on the Atlantic and features an 18-hole Greg Norman-designed championship links course.

The Lodge at Doonbeg, consists of 218 hotel suites, an expansive spa and several restaurants all which will be managed directly by the Trump Hotel Collection, Trump’s award-winning hotel management company.
