Fiona makes stunning golfing comeback

After a 20 year absence from the game, Suffolk golfer Fiona Edmond showed the old adage ‘it’s like riding a bike’ was more pertinent to golf as she broke the ladies course record at Ipswich GC.

She was presented with a glass replica of her scorecard as a special memento in recognition of her achievement, which saw her shoot a four-under par 67, in a SLCGA Division 1 medal competition, breaking the previous record of 68, just three months after dusting off her clubs.

Fiona, who owns and runs Green Island Gardens, in Ardleigh, Colchester, was forced to give up the game after injury and developing ME, before family-life and business commitments left little time to play.

She decided to pick up the clubs again after her five sons – JJ, Rory, Angus, Sam and Luke – who range from eight to 18-years of age, all joined Ipswich Golf Club as junior members.

“All five boys are part of an exceptional junior section at Ipswich,” she said. “I spent a lot of time taxiing them to and from the club, so the boys asked me to dust off the clubs and join them for a game. Once I’d finished that round I went straight to the General Manager’s office and joined the club.”

Despite having not played for two decades Fiona had lost none of her skills and was quickly back into the swing of things, swiftly breaking the course record.

The 47-year-old added: “It was like rolling back the years making putt after putt and I was gobsmacked to receive such a wonderful memento, it is the nicest thing I have ever been presented with. It has pride of place on the mantlepiece.”

Neill Ellice, General Manager of Ipswich GC, said: “It was quite a remarkable achievement from Fiona to come back into the game after 20 years, join our club and promptly break the ladies course record.

“The club is a very welcoming environment to all new members and Fiona certainly made a name for herself early on in her life as a member here. We have memberships available and new members joining all the time, it will be interesting to see if her feat can be repeated in the near future.”
