*Musselburgh Old Links (pictured), East Lothian – Nine-hole courses are not everybody’s cup of tee but this one is well worth playing and adding to your golfing CV.
Musselburgh’s revered Old Links you see is where it all started – it’s officially the oldest surviving golf course in the world and in fact staged six Open Championships between 1874-1889. The place simply reeks in history – it was the home course of five Open champions – and being just three miles outside Edinburgh off the busy A1, is dead easy to get to.
*The Glen, North Berwick – East Lothian is one of Scotland’s premier golfing stretches with Muirfield, Gullane and North Berwick holding centre stage but the more humble Glen with its stunning views and reasonably priced green fees presents a worthy addition. The 13th ‘Sea Hole’ always springs to mind but there are numerous good holes on this course thanks to excellent greenkeeping and the natural flow and challenge of many holes.
*Whitekirk, East Lothian – Fun, quirky and challenging undulating heathland track with stunning Firth of Forth vistas.
*Haddington, East Lothian – Mature parkland layout plotted within a former country estate with the River Tyne coming into play on the 11th and 15th holes.
*St Michael’s, Fife – Pleasant parkland layout beside the main Edinburgh-Aberdeen railway line and just outside St Andrews, the Home of Golf. It’s fun, challenging and great value
* Fairmont St Andrews, Fife – Home of a luxury resort as well as two stunning and contrasting 18-hole clifftop layouts, namely the Torrance and Kittocks. A terrific place to stay and play just down the road from the Home of Golf.
