Wilson Staff have spent months working on their new super high moi Wilson Staff Spine driver, named after its spine like backbone. It started life as a heel scoop driver (a little like Cleveland’s HiBore) but Wilson engineers soon realised something more radical was called for if they were to hit the same high moi numbers from the Wilson Spine driver that the likes of Callaway and Nike were spouting.

After experimenting with a number of different designs the model the company have opted for gives big gains in performance over their previous Wilson Dd6+ driver.  It’s the same old story of repositioning weight from the crown lower and deeper to raise moi. But this time by increasing moi by 15%, meaning the average golfer will find them more forgiving on off centre hits. And should mean more fairways hit per round so we reckon it’s a worthwhile addition.

Sound is more important when buying a driver now than ever before and the Wilson Staff Spine driver is very loud, so the golf club might not be to everyones liking. But its specially designed UST High Moi V2 shaft and high stability head design should be. Only you can decide if your comfortable using a square driver but iff you are then the Wilson Spine driver looks like a decent quality contender which in our opinion is well worth a smack when they hit the shopfloor in 2008!
