Video review: Nike’s new VR STR8-Fit Driver

Published:

If you want to start off the 2010 season as the envy of all your golfing mates, then one way to do it is to stick the new Nike VR STR8-Fit driver in your bag.

Not only does it look the business with its striking red, silver and black colour scheme but it is packed full of technology.

The headline stealer is the STR8-Fit feature which allows the head of the club to be set in any one of 32 different head positions to promote different shot shapes and trajectories.

The red compression channel is also a noticeable feature and this sits in the sole just behind the face to deliver uniform compression across the entire face. This means the face feels hot and gives consistent distance even when the ball is struck away from the sweet spot.

“The Compression Channel technology takes the rigidity out of the sole and provides more flex in the heel,” said Tom Stites, director of club creation for Nike Golf.  “By adding this technology, we have made the VR drivers more forgiving for the better players when they miss it in the lower zone of the heel.”

Loft Options:  8.5 (RH); 9.5 (RH/LH); 10.5 (RH/LH); 11.5 (RH/LH); All available in:  S, R. RRP: £360

The VR drivers aren’t available until February 1, 2010 but Today’s Golfer managed to get one out on the range to test it. David Connor, equipment editor, and instruction editor Joel Tadman deliver their verdict in the video below.
