Video review: Nike SQ Machspeed hybrid

If hybrid clubs are a failry new phenomenon in golf then square hybrids, such as the new Nike SQ Machspeed hybrid, are virtually space age.

By now we all know the benefits of hybrid clubs in that they are easier to hit, longer, higher launching and more forgiving than their long-iron counterparts. And in the same we we are aware of the supposed technical benefits of square-headed clubs to distribute more weight into the perimeter of the head for added forgiveness.

However, they’ve often looked uncomfortable on the eye so this is something Nike have sought to address with the new SQ Machspeed hybrid.

It features a compact head profile and more rounded edges to make it more appealing to look at without losing the benefits of the square shape.

Like all the clubs in the new Machspeed range it is also designed with Total Swing Aerodynamics so the head produces less drag throughout the swing and can therefore be swung faster – meaning higher ball speeds and greater distance.

So have Nike succeeded in making a square-shaped hybrid that will appeal to the masses? TG Equipment Editor David Connor and Features Writer Kit Alexander have had the club on the range to find out.
