What Gear focus: brand new Wilson Shockwave driver

Wilson Staff’s new light-weight Shockwave driver features in our exclusive What Gear 2010 section in association with online golf.

New for 2010, the Shockwave is designed to maximise the clubhead speed of even the slowest-swinging amateur golfers.

Weighing in at just 265g, the Shockwave is 10 per cent lighter than other light-weight drivers and 25g less than the Wilson Smooth.

The biggest weight saving comes in the ultra-light 50g UST Mamiya shaft, while the thickness of the clubhead walls have all been decreased to save weight. Even the grip has been made from a low-density compound which is 8g lighter than standard grips.

The only weight that has been added is the 5g tungsten insert in the rear to promote a deeper centre of gravity for a higher ball flight.

The bottom line is the lighter the club, the faster you can potentially swing it – meaning more distance!
