Phil Mickelson puts two drivers in bag for the Masters

Phil Mickelson looks to have sprung yet another equipment surprise at Augusta as he reveals he is likely to go with two drivers in the bag to defend his title.

The Callaway man made headlines in 2006, when he also won, after putting two drivers in the bag – one to hit a draw and one for a fade.

However, this time round Mickelson has distance on his mind and will therefore carry his normal driver plus another one with a longer shaft and lower loft.

Lefty believes the added carry will give him the advantage on holes 1, 5 and 8 where he will be able to carry the bunkers off the tee. The additional driver is a 5.9 degree Callaway Razr Hawk Tour with a shaft that is an inch longer than normal. This will give him additional clubhead speed and less backspin for greater carry – about 15-20 yards according to the player.

He will use his other driver, a 7.5 degree Callaway Razr Hawk on the other holes where accuracy is more of a factor.

Mickelson will sacrifice his four iron to put the extra driver in the bag because in the warm weather he believes he won’t need to use it on any of the par 3s or to reach the par 5s in two.

It’s a risky strategy for Mickelson, who is already known to be wayward at times off the tee, but the last time he experimented with two drivers at Augusta he walked off with the green jacket.
