G-Mac defends equipment change

US Open champion Graeme McDowell has defended his change of equipment after shooting a course record 62 with his new Srixon and Cleveland gear.

The Northern Irishman had come under scrutiny after switching from Callaway following the best season of his career in 2010 but after a fine performance at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions in Kapalua he insists he has made the right choice.

“I’m just over the moon with the way I played this week, Srixon are making some fantastic equipment. The Z-Star XV ball is amazing and my new ZTX irons are beautiful. “McDowell said.

“I’ve just proven to the world I’m not naive enough to switch to inferior equipment. I’m very confident in Srixon. … All I’ve done is gone from one great company to another.”

McDowell ended the week in third place after his stunning 11-under-par final round left him just one shot off the pace at -23.

His performance saw him T1 in greens in regulations and also cemented his place at no5 in the world rankings.
