Old and new Titleist gear powers Simpson to maiden Major victory at US Open

Webb Simpson relied on a mixture of old and new Titleist equipment as he powered to his first Major Championship victory at the US Open in San Fransisco.

Simpson’s 680MB irons were launched back in 2003, but they certainly worked well for the 26-year-old who carded a final round 68.

The American saw off the challenge of Northern Ireland’s Graeme McDowell and compatriot Michael Thompson, winning by a single stroke on +1.

In addition to the bladed irons, Simpson was also using Titleist’s 909D3 driver and two 910F fairway woods.

He had a 21-degree 910H hybrid in the bag as well as two Vokey Design TVD wedges (54 and 58 degrees) and trusted Titleist’s Pro V1x ball throughout the four rounds.

He held his nerve on the green using PING’s Craz-E putter.

Tiger Woods, who seemed destined to win his first Major since 2008 after two impressive opening rounds, dropped six shots in his first six holes and slumped to a final round 73 which left him six adrift of eventual winner Simpson.

Jim Furyk, who along with McDowell could have forced an 18-hole play-off on Monday with a birdie on the 18th, finished in a tie for fourth on +3 with David Toms, Padraig Harrington, John Peterson and Jason Dufner.
