Brandt Snedeker In The Bag: Tour Championship Winning Clubs

Brandt Snedeker cruised to the Tour Championship title in Atlanta, and with it won the FedEx Cup and its $10m jackpot.

The American had shared the overnight lead with Justin Rose, and had the Englishman won, the $10m bonus would have gone to the then FedEx Cup leader Rory McIlroy. But Snedeker held his nerve with a two-under-par 68, and Rose could only finish with a level-par 71.

Rose had to hole a long putt on the 18th just to stay ahead of compatriot Luke Donald, who fired two 67s over the weekend to move through the field.

Snedeker was one of five players – along with Rory McIlroy, Tiger Woods, Nick Watney and Phil Mickelson – who knew that victory in Atlanta could be enough to also win the FedEx Cup and its huge cash prize.

Snedeker’s dreams were only briefly threatened during the final round, when he found the lake at the sixth hole, resulting in a double bogey. But superb putts from 40 and 18 feet at the eighth and 13th, combined with an amzing record of missing only one putt from inside eight feet all week, meant that he romped to a three-shot victory.

He said: “I had complete confidence in what I was doing. I don’t know where it came from, but I hope to rekindle it in the future.”

Snedeker’s win, and Jim Furyk’s seventh placed finish, will have brought a smile to Ryder Cup captain Davis Love III’s face after he recently named the duo as USA wildcard picks. Team Europe’s Rose said: “I think it’s set up for a great Ryder Cup week. Two great teams – all in the top 35 in the world – probably as strong as it’s ever been.”

After 11 successive rounds in the 60s, McIlroy closed with a 74 for a share of 10th place on one-under. He still won a $3m bonus for finishing the season in second place however, with Woods picking up $2m for third.
