TaylorMade Unveil New Lethal Ball

Published:

Three years after TaylorMade launched the world’s first five-piece golf ball in the form of the Penta TP, they’ve now announced the introduction of the LETHAL golf ball, designed to deliver tee-to-green performance for golfers of all abilities.

Following the success of the Penta ball, TaylorMade designers looked closely at how they could improve the aerodynamics of future balls and came up with a product that features an advanced 322-dimple pattern design which helps the ball to perform better and more consistently in windy conditions.

The five-layer concept that first appeared in the Penta remains and each layer has been designed to help specific areas of a golfer’s game.

The soft core produces low driver spin for greater distance off the tee, while the inner mantle reduces long-iron spin. The middle mantle works with the outer layers to create controllable spin off the mid irons, while the outer mantle generates low-launch, but high spin with shorter irons and wedges. The thin, urethane cover creates shot-stopping spin, as well as ensuring the ball remains durable.

“Our engineers set out to create a golf ball with all-around performance for all conditions,” said Dean Snell, Vice President of golf ball R&D.

“Today’s clubs are designed to launch the ball higher, so our team worked to ensure that these higher launch conditions do not cause the shot to balloon or become more affected by the wind. We designed LETHAL to further maximise distance, extend the second stage of flight, and control spin and aerodynamics when playing into the wind.”

In addition to the five-layer system, the new LETHAL also benefits from TaylorMade’s Low Drag Performance Aerodynamics which enhances distance.

And although the ball won’t be available to consumers until February 1, it’s already had some success on Tour with Ryder Cup hero Justin Rose. Not only did the Englishman use the ball (under the codename Project 5) for that glorious team victory in Medinah, he also used on the way to victory at the Turkish Airlines World Golf Final and a second place finish at The Tour Championship.
