Tiger Woods secured his 75th PGA Tour win with a runaway four-shot victory at Torrey Pines, his eighth title at the venue.
The American entered Monday’s closing 11 holes – after fog delayed the weekend’s play – leading by six shots. By the time he birdied the 13th that advantage had grown to eight.
Woods, distracted and impatient with the slow pace of play, made two bogeys and a double over the last five holes, but by then he’d built enough of a cushion over fellow Americans Brandt Snedeker and Nick Watney.
“I played great this week,” Woods said, after converting a third-round lead for the 50th time in 54 attempts. “Pretty much every facet of my game was going.
“My short game was back to how I know it can be. That allowed me to save some pars, save some birdies, and move my way up the leaderboard.”
The win puts Woods just seven shy of Sam Snead’s all-time record PGA Tour wins record, while it is also the seventh time Woods has won at the opening PGA Tour event of the season.
Nick Watney, who was Woods’ closest challenger for a few holes after defending champion Brandt Snedeker finished off his round of 69, was suitably impressed. He said: “I don’t know if anyone would have beaten him this week. He’s definitely on his game. When he gets like that you have to play your best to compete.”
The win continues a solid start for Nike Golf in 2013, who have won two of the first four events on the PGA Tour with Russell Henley and Woods. On the European Tour, Nike’s Scott Jamieson claimed the Nelson Mandela Championship title and new Nike athlete, Thorbjørn Olesen finished tied for second at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship.
