Michael Thompson In The Bag: Honda Classic Winning Clubs

Published:

Michael Thompson claimed his first PGA Tour title at the Honda Classic, after the British challenge of Lee Westwood, David Lynn, Justin Rose and Graeme McDowell fell away during the final round.

Americans Thompson and Luke Guthrie shared the final round lead, but a closing one-under-par in tough conditions was enough to secure victory in Florida for PING staffer Thompson.

Westwood had started the day two shots off the lead, but had to settle for a share of ninth – alongside Graeme McDowell and Charl Schwartzel – after struggling to four-over-par.

Fellow Englishman David Lynn tied for fourth with Justin Rose and Keegan Bradley after a closing 69 and joined Thompson as only one of three players to break par on the final day at Palm Beach Gardens.

Thompson’s lead had stretched to four, but a bogey on the 16th meant the 28-year-old led by just one shot from Geoff Ogilvy heading down the 18th.

But a spectauclar bunker shot to five-feet on the par-5 last meant he could roll in a birdie to win by two.

However, the event will undoubtedly be remembered for the dramatic withdrawal of Rory McIlroy during Friday’s second round. The Northern Irishman was seven-over-par through eight holes and walked off the course after finding the water with his approach on his 9th hole.

The world number one later cited severe wisdom tooth pain, leading to a lack of concentration, as the reason behind his actions.

But nothing will take the shine off Thompson’s win, here are the clubs he used to secure his rookie victory:
