Tiger Woods In The Bag: Arnold Palmer Invitational Winning Clubs

Tiger Woods has captured eight titles at Bay Hill.

Tiger Woods replaced Rory McIlroy as world number one after winning the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill by two shots.

The 37-year-old fired a two-under-par final round to hold-off Justin Rose and Rickie Fowler and claim his 77th PGA Tour title, moving him to within five of Sam Snead’s all-time record.

Woods resumed the storm-delayed final round three shots clear and was never seriously challenged by Fowler, who took an eight at the par-5 16th and Rose, whose second place finish lifts him to world number three.

“I’m very pleased with the way I’m playing,” said Woods, who became number one for the 11th time during his career. “It was a by-product of hard work, patience and getting back to playing golf tournaments.

“I’ve turned some of the weaknesses that I had last year into strengths. I’m really excited about the rest of this year.”

Woods has now claimed six titles from his last 20 starts on the PGA Tour, including this eighth career win at Bay Hill.

Fowler had briefly loomed into contention when he got within two shots of Woods with four holes remaining, but a four-shot swing on the 16th when Woods found the par-5 green in two and Fowler put two shots into the water, meant his challenge was a short one. 

Playing in the group in front of the leaders, Rose, dropped a couple of shots early on, but went on to record four birdies to ensure sole possession of second. Northern Ireland’s McIlroy did not play at Bay Hill, but can regain the number one ranking by winning this week’s Houston Open, which Woods is not playing in.
