Cobra launches FLY-Z family

Cobra has launched three Fly-Z product lines comprising woods and irons aimed at different abilities of golfer. The Fly-Z, Fly-Z+ and Fly-Z XL all hit the shelves in the UK on January 20th, 2015 and come in four colours – black, white, orange and blue – as well as RH and LH. One revolutionary technology, found in the better player Fly-Z+ driver, incorporates a moveable weight in the sole of the club that changes the CG position and launch characteristics.

“I’m really excited about the new Fly-Z+ driver. In our early prototype testing I saw the positive effects the two settings could have on ball flight. For me, the front CG setting yielded the ball flight I want to see on the course,” said Rickie Fowler, Cobra athlete and PGA Tour Pro. “The adjustable loft setting Cobra introduced last year was a huge advantage to my game, but now adding this new Zone Weighting to fine tune ball flight is really game-changing.”

All three new 460cc drivers, the Fly-Z, Fly-Z+ and Fly-Z XL, feature Cobra’s new Speed Channel Technology, an engineered trench around the perimeter of the face to increase ball speeds across it. Forgiveness is also boosted with the use of Forged E9 Zone Face technology, which removes weight from key areas behind the face and hosel to increase the size of the sweetspot. A low, backward CG helps reduce spin and increase launch while maintaining MOI.

FLY-Z+
In the Fly-Z+ driver, Cobra’s FlipZone weight technology allows golfers to position a 15-gram weight either in the middle or back of the sole, changing the spin, launch and trajectory to maximize distance. The front CG position provides a mid-launch angle with ultra-low spin and a penetrating ball flight with more roll out, while the back CG position delivers a mid-launch angle with 400rpm more backspin, resulting in a higher ball flight, with more carry and workability.

The FlipZone is Cobra’s first front-to-back CG adjustable technology, joining the existing MyFly8 adjustable loft system and SmartPad technology that keeps the face angle square at address regardless of the chosen loft. Advanced multi-material construction, comprising a new Titanium 6-4 body, carbon fiber crown and sole pieces maximize discretionary weight strategically positioned low in the head for maximum distance and forgiveness.

Cobra Fly Z plus colours

The adjustable Cobra Fly-Z+ fairway woods feature a tour-inspired, compact head designed to deliver maximum distance from the tee or the fairway with control thanks to the new Speed Channel Face with front CG Zone Weighting. The Fly-Z+ fairway wood also features Forged E9 Zone Face Weighting, and MyFly8 and SmartPad technology, which allows the golfer to choose from eight loft/trajectory settings with a square face at address regardless of loft.

Details: Fly-Z+ driver lofts 8.5° –11.5° adjustable with three draw settings. RRP £329 with a 60g Matrix VLCT ST shaft as standard. Fly-Z+ Fairways RRP £199, available in 3-4F (12° -15°) and 4-5F (16°-19°) adjustable, in four colours. No hybrids in the range.

Fly-Z
Designed to deliver the distance with increased forgiveness, the Fly-Z driver has the 15-gram weight fixed in the low, back position and offers approximately one degree higher launch angle and 300rpm more spin than the Fly-Z+ driver in the back FlipZone position, and is more stable on off-center hits. It has the new Speed Channel, as well as the E9 Zone Face structure and Crown Zone Weighting that combine to create a large amount of discretionary weight in an all titanium driver. MyFly8 and SmartPad technology offer eight adjustable loft/trajectory settings (9.0°-12.0°) all with a square clubface.

Fly Z woods

The adjustable Fly-Z fairway woods and hybrids also feature the Speed Channel technology found in the driver for more speed across the face and increased distance on miss-hits. Zone weighting in the head creates a low CG for more ball speed while maintaining MOI. The thin, high-strength steel face plate insert means the sweetspot of the fairway wood is 20 per cent larger and 18 per cent thinner than previous models. Cobra’s Speed Channel technology also transfers into the irons.

Fly Z iron

A visible trench positioned on both the cavity behind the face and on the sole of the Fly-Z irons is designed to flex and recover at impact to deliver faster ball speeds. Improved feel comes from a harmonic TPU cavity insert positioned directly behind the impact zone. Deep cavity undercutting and heel and toe weighting boost performance on mishits.

Details: Driver RRP £249. Available in four colors with a Matrix VLCT SP shaft as standard. Fly-Z fairways (RRP £189) comes in 3-4F (13° -16°) and 5-7 (17° – 20°) adjustable, in four colours. Fly-Z hybrids (RRP £159) comes in three adjustable heads: 2-3H, 3-4H and 4-5H. Fly-Z irons come in 4-PW and Black as standard, other colours available through custom. RRP £549 FST Steel, £649 Matrix Graphite (5-PW). RH and LH.

The Fly-Z XL
It’s engineered to help make golf easier through higher, more draw-biased ball flights to correct slices. The all-titanium head features a slightly lower profile face combined with an offset hosel to deliver the trajectory often needed by seniors and beginners. Being the only offset driver on the market, the Fly-Z XL delivers up to 17.5 yards of draw bias, even more than the Fly Z in its draw position. It also features Cobra’s new Speed Channel Face with Forged E9 Face Weighting, Crown Zone technology along with an all-titanium head, which saves weight and helps deliver a back CG position that yields increased forgiveness and draw bias.

Fly Z XL group

Fly-Z XL fairways and hybrids boast the Speed Channel Face and offset design with maximum perimeter weighting to offer the beginner or senior golfer maximum forgiveness, launch and draw assistance. Within the range, the oversized yet traditionally shaped Fly-Z XL irons are designed to give golfers confidence at address and deliver increased distance through consistently higher trajectories. In addition, the hollow construction allows for a thinner face that, along with the Speed Channel, delivers additional ball speed. The progressive offset design draw increases the draw bias. This model is also available as a combo set, which includes the dual cavity design hollow and cavity back irons and three Fly-Z XL Hybrids deliver enhanced playability and forgiveness over long irons.

Details: RRP £199 features a Graphite Matrix shaft and is available in 9.5°, 10.5° and 11.5° RH and LH. Fly-Z XL Fairways RRP £159. Comes in three lofts: 16°, 20° and 23°. The Fly-Z XL Hybrids RRP £129, available in 19°, 22°, 25°, 28°, and 31°. The Fly-Z XL Iron set comprises 5-GW, RRP £399 steel. Combo set RRP £549 steel, £599 graphite comprising 4-6H (graphite), 7-PW (steel or graphite). RH & LH.
