Ping unveil new Vault milled putters

Milled putters are seen as the pinnacle of flat sticks, because every head is precisely created by a computer controlled milling machine. Each dimension is cut into a solid block of steel or aluminium, which guarantees quality, precision and of course extra cost. But if the truth be known it’s also the easiest way to tailor a specific model to individual tour pro’s tastes. A base model can be amended by the computer controlling the milling machine (rather than creating new master models and moulds like a cast putter) to create the exact look a tour player desires and that’s how Ping’s new Vault putters have been born. Through working with their staff pro’s like Lee Westwood and Bubba Watson.

The new Vault range extents to four models, two blades (Anser 2 and Voss) and two mallets (Oslo and Bergen). Each of the blades is machined from soft 303 stainless steel and both have a traditional cranked Anser-style hosel. The Anser head was inspired by Ping’s original Anser 2 and thanks to the head material and face thickness Ping reckon it gives a really pure impact sound. The Voss has a super clean look at address with a ball width cavity back and scalloped rather than stepped back, which Ping say breeds confidence on the short grass.

Both mallets are milled from soft light aluminium and feature heavy stainless steel sole plates to increase stability and forgiveness. The Oslo which was used by LPGA teenage sensation Brooke Henderson to win her first major is a smaller, clean looking mallet with a cavity back and long sight line to aid with alignment. The Bergen’s got a slightly larger head, with a sight line on the top edge to encourage impacting putts on the centre of the ball.

Ping preach about the importance of variable depth face grooves on putters, so while the faces of the Vault’s don’t have inserts they do have precision milled face grooves which helps normalise off centre hits to improve distance control consistency.

Expect to find each Vault available in a Platinum or Slate finish, along with an optional adjustable length shaft so you can tailor them to your own putting style and a new oversized grip. Quality milled putters don’t come cheap so expect the Vault’s to set you back between £275 – £299 for further information visit www.ping.com
