Should you buy Samsung golf shoes?

Buying golf shoes is normally fairly simple. Find a pair you like, check they’re not too expensive, get the size that fits and you’re done.

You’re normally choosing from the usual candidates: FootJoy, Ecco, Adidas, Nike Skechers, Puma, Callaway and Stubart.

But what about Samsung? They might not be the first name you think of when buying new golf shoes, but maybe they should be.

Take a look at this video:

The Samsung Smart Balance golf shoes, showcased at Mobile World Congress, have soles lined with pressure sensors that measure the downward force you’re applying in different spots. For golf, that means they can measure how you shift you weight, how hard you plant each foot at different stages of the swing, and your overall balance and centre of gravity.

That technology has existed for quite a while in ‘force plates’ or ‘balance labs’, but you’ve never been able to get the data just from a pair of shoes before.

Paired with an app, you can watch videos of your swing alongside graphs and a heat map showing the pressure you’re exerting at each stage of your golf swing.

The shoes will be launched under the name Iofit, which is a spinoff of Samsung. They’re expected to retail for $249 (UK prices not yet announced), but you’ll be able to get them cheaper if you back the soon-to-be-launched Kickstarter campaign.
