Research shows a quarter of all shots in a round of golf are played using a wedge. It’s no surprise then they should be a vital part of every golfers game. Get the right selection and they’ve got the ability to set up birdies and grind out pars, but with a massive selection of head shapes, bounce options and sole grinds to choose from we reckon many golfers make the wrong selection, putting their scoring potential at risk. Titleist’s new SM6 wedges come in 5 different sole grinds, we thought it was time to explain which suits who.

M Grind

Grinding material from the heel, toe and trailing edge means there’s less sole in contact with the ground which Titleist say provides maximum versatility. The M has a mid to low bounce which is ideal for players looking for versatility and it’s well suited to those who play shots with a variety of face positions. Only available in mid – higher lofts means it’s great for shorter shots into greens, more so than full on approach shots.

Suited to swing type: Shallow/Sweeper, Neutral.

Suited to: Firm – Medium turf/conditions.

Available lofts: 54.08, 56.08, 58.08, 60.08, 62.08.

S Grind

Bob Vokey developed the S Grind in very close collaboration with short game wizard Steve Stricker. It’s a full soled wedge with material ground from the trailing edge, which narrows and slightly reduces the bounce of the sole. S grind is designed for players who prefer playing shots with a square face position.

Suited to swing type: Neutral, Steep/Digger.

Suited to: Medium – Soft turf/conditions.

Lofts: 54.10, 56.10, 58.10, 60.10

F Grind

A full sole, with moderate amounts of sole camber and radius makes the F very versatile. The F grind is ideal for full shots from turf and for players with a steep aggressive swing type. A full compliment of lower lofts means you’ll find an F Grind solution to cover off your gap to sand wedge play.

Suited to swing type: Shallow/Sweeper, Neutral, Steep/Digger.

Suited to: Firm, Medium and Soft turf/conditions.

Lofts: 46.08, 48.08, 50.08, 50.12, 52.08, 52.12, 54.14, 56.14

K Grind

A wide full sole with enhanced camber, makes the K the ultimate bunker club say Titleist. The extra camber makes the K grind very forgiving from sand and turf conditions. We reckon they’re ideal for those less confident in their short game ability, particularly golfers with a tendency to hit the shortest shots heavy. Two high lofts mean they’re best suited to the shortest shots.

Suited to swing type: Neutral, Steep/Digger.

Suited to: Medium – Soft turf/conditions.

Lofts: 58.12, 60.12.

L Grind

Extra material is removed from the toe, heel and trailing edge to create a narrow low bounce sole. The L grind is ideal in firm conditions, it’s designed for skilled players who frequently open or close the club face to create shots around the green. Short game magician Phil Mickelson designed the L Grind with Bob Vokey, especially to have low effective bounce and shallow out his divot pattern.

Suited to swing type: Shallow/Sweeper.

Suited to: Firm turf/conditions.

Lofts: 58.04, 60.04.
