RETURNING DUVAL READY FOR AUGUSTA TEST

When it was announced that David Duval was coming to the interview room, the silent, unasked question was ‘Why?’

The guy hasn’t been able to hit his hat since drifting outside the world’s top-500, and although he has shown better form since nearly winning the US Open at Bethpage Black last year, he’s hardly shown the consistency which got him to number one in the world.

“It’s great to be back here, and my 4-year-old is hopefully going to caddy for me in the Par-3 Tournament on Wednesday,” he said.

“For the past year I think I’ve played far better than my scoring has suggested. That’s just golf though, and scoring is often the last thing to come. I still don’t make nearly as many putts as I’d like and I don’t get up and down nearly as much as I’d like, but I guess everyone says that. I think I have a good chance of winning this week.”

Duval used to contend every year in this event. From 1998, he finished 2nd, 6th, 3rd and 2nd in four consecutive years; and all four years he reckons he should have won.

Then, from 2002 – 2006 he missed the cut every year he played, shooting 89, 82 four years ago. It’s good to have him back…
