Hole 16 – Corner of the Dyke

Published:

Par 4 / 423 yards

How it played out in 2005:

Eagles: 0 Biridies: 34 Pars: 332 Bogeys: 90 Others: 15

Out of bounds looms large so the line off the tee is out past the Principal’s Nose – a group of bunkers that seem to draw balls from all directions. Ian succumbed and added three sand shots to his tally.
IAN: 9 NEIL: 7

LUKE SAYS: “A short par 4, but one that most play cautiously because of bunkers in the fairway and OB down the right. A long iron off the tee leaves a mid iron to the green.”

PADRAIG SAYS: I tend to lay up short of the Principal’s Nose bunkers, and then take my punishment, because that immediately turns the hole into a really tough par 4. The problem for me is that it is an awkwardly-shaped tee shot.

Obviously you don’t want to go near the out-of-bounds right and yet if you draw it, it tends to take you away from the hole and you are then hitting back into the wind. So, I am hitting probably a 4-iron from 30 yards short of the bunkers, into a very, very difficult green. Those who can hit a driver straight down here deserve all the rewards they get.
